Five years ago I had never once believed in God, not even as a child. I was a content atheist and thought it was simply obvious that God did not exist. I thought that religion and reason were incompatible, and eventually became vocally anti-Christian. Imagine my surprise to find myself today, just a few years later, a convert to Christianity who loves her faith (my husband and I both entered the Catholic Church in 2007). This is the chronicle of my journey.

VITALS: I'm 32, have been married for five years, and have four young children: a 4-year-old boy, 3-year-old girl, 1-year-old girl, and another girl born in March 2009.

WFMW: Avoiding the biscuit can pop

If, like me, you are a high-strung person who finds the POP! upon opening biscuit or crescent roll cans to be an unbearable assault on the senses, I have the best Works for Me Wednesday tip you have ever seen. Be prepared for your life to change:

When unrolling the paper around the can, press the can between your knees so that it won't expand much when the pressure from inside is released.

If, like my husband, you have some inexplicable ability to find opening biscuit cans to be a perfectly enjoyable activity, you will not see what the big deal is about this tip; if, however, you are a freak like me who has been known to hide in closets until the dreadful popping moment is over, you will find it to be nothing short of life-changing to be able to open your pressurized pastry cans in peace.

(Also, I should note that the can of butter flake crescent rolls you see pictured were, uhh, for someone else. As I've mentioned, I have issues with processed carbs and simply use my willpower of steel to avoid eating things like canned crescent rolls. Not that I'd feed my kids such low-nutrient foods either. I bake all their breads from scratch. Uhh, yeah.)

Go check out more great tips at Shannon's Works for me Wednesday!

The pop drives me nuts too. Course, any sound over 3 DB will send me over the edge.

      Three kids.

May I also take a moment to say: Brand name refrigerated dough is infinitely better than the generic stuff. I always have trouble with the generic dough ripping apart.

I love-hate white carbs. LOVE HATE LOVE HATE LOVE HATE!

But... the "pop" is the best thing about opening a can!

Does this make me a bad person?

Alternatively, you could move to the UK where we don't have pressurized pastry cans. That might be overkill, though ;).

In line at the grocery store yesterday, a mom and her little girl (maybe 7 years old)were buying one of those pressurized cans of rolls. The little girls was pretty excited about them, and kept waving the can around, and rolling it on the conveyor belt. Just as I received my change from the cashier...POP! The lid, icing disk and rolls went flying. I usually have a hard time getting those packages to open cleanly, and here, this litle girl, with no effort at all, managed with no trouble - or tools - at all!

Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but last I knew, those cans of bread still had trans fats. Thankfully, I've gotten away from bread in a can and haven't had to worry about the "pop" for a long time. :) It's not TOO tricky making homemade biscuits, granted they're not as fluffy, but they're still tasty, and full of nutrients and not the bad stuff.

Oh, that's funny. I always wondered if I was strange--here I am, a grown woman, and I scrunch up my eyes and shoulders every time I bang the can on the edge of the counter. I hate that pop. But, honestly, I don't think I hate it enough to put the can between my legs.

Apparently my male brain never realized that you can unwrap those things. I just smack them against the counter til they pop! Keeps me from the anxiety of wondering when it will go off though.

You mean I'm not alone in the world with my loathing of the pop? As a kid, I would run and hide until my mom told me it was over. I'm a little better now that I'm a "grown-up" but I still usually leave it to hubby. Thanks for the tip!

Too funny. I'm in the love the pop faction. But I've got enough of my own quirks that I would never poke fun at someone else's.

Just curious, what do you do when someone is opening champagne?

My arms grow longer every time I open a can like that... I hate balloons popping, too. Remember "getting sick" so I could go to the nurse's office in elementary school during balloon popping parties. Completely freaked me out!

Wow, Jen. That's AMAZING!!! I've always been afraid of the popping sound- probably because you never know *quite* when it will happen and I dislike surprises- so this is a perfect solution!

However, when I first saw the picture it looked a little like you were using a can of crescent rolls as a Thighmaster. Oh, the irony :-)

I HATE that POP. The other day my mom was making some of those biscuits and it didn't pop when she took the paper off. She left it on the counter to get the cookie sheet...both our backs were turned and that can popped so loud and hard that it fell on the floor and both my mom and I had a heart stopping few seconds. Next time she'll make SURE it's popped before either of us turn our backs on it!!

Oh this is way too funny, Jen! It's like that balloon thing, too. I know it's gonna happen, but you still squint your eyes, turn your head and hesitate before it happens.

Usually a lurker here, but I really love your blog. I tagged you, check out my blog.

      Hugs!

I don't mind the can pop. HATE, hate, hate balloons popping, though. Strange. I don't much like the biscuits or the crescents, but I do love the orange and cinnamon rolls. The challenge is not eating all the frosting before you pull the rolls out of the oven. Each can should come with two cups of frosting.

OK, if we are all sharing, I will say that the biscuit pop is no problem, but peach skin fuzz is enough to make me freak! Also, anything with the same slime factor as oatmeal (I love it baked into muffins, cookies, etc, but NOT cereal) is gag inducing. And little girls with that really high tinwhistle shriek make the fillings in my teeth dance!! And not in a good way.

The pop of the biscuit can has never bothered me, but the texture of pudding is gag-worthy. I can eat yoghurt, but only if I don't think too much about it while doing it.

I have plenty of other already existing quirks, but have managed to find one to add to the list. I despise being called "Girl". As in "You go Girl!" or "Girl, let me tell you!" or any of its equally sassy sisters. *shudder*

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. I so also thought I was the only one who had that problem. I hand those things to my husband, go into another room, plug my ears and close my eyes while he opens it. (And yes, he laughs at me for this.) Lately I've been making more of an effort to make sure that we all sit down for dinner every day, which for our family means that I need to be getting with the cooking before my husband comes home. Which means if I want crescent-rolls-in-a-can, I have to open them myself. I've managed it a couple times so far, with a lot of closing of the eyes and looking away and trying to cover my ears with my shoulders while pushing on it with a spoon...(whereupon it rolls away from me, because one of my hands, instead of holding the thing, is covering the ear that isn't covered by a shoulder. So I have to try to prop the thing up so it doesn't roll when I push the spoon into it... All very awkward.) :) I think I'll try your suggestion. Part of the issue, for me, is not just the sound, but the overall feeling that the thing *explodes* when it opens. And no matter how many times I tell myself that small pieces of debris are not going to go flying into my face, my gut just doesn't believe it. :)

And Amy(@FinerThings), I would have joined you in the nurses office. I still cannot eat at restaurants that hand out balloons to small children. (it's the squeak of little hands on fragile latex surfaces... )
