I need blog recommendations
I can’t do much right now. One of the surprising side effects of my condition is that I am extremely easily overwhelmed.
My brain seems to be operating at about 60% of capacity, maybe as an oxygen-preserving measure? I can — and am in fact supposed to — get up and walk around occasionally, but even normal household occurrences like having one kid rooting through the pantry and two others fighting over a toy are enough to send me into a near panic attack (luckily I have a lot of help and don’t usually have to handle that kind of thing by myself). It’s hard for me to keep up with conversations for more than a few minutes, to write replies to emails, and I even have trouble reading books, since my focus drifts after a few pages.
One thing I can do, though, is read blogs. They have been a lifeline for me through all this. Reading posts about what’s going on in other people’s lives has given me a much-needed sense of connectedness to the world, and the one-way format (as opposed to, say, social media or in-person interactions) is easy for me to handle since it requires little brainpower.
The only problem is that I am reading all my favorite blogs faster than the authors can post. I keep opening up Google Reader to find no new content. So, obviously, I need some new blogs to read. This is where you come in:
What blogs do you recommend that I read? What are some of your favorites?
The ones that I love the most right now are slice-of-life blogs where the authors talk about the goings on in their lives. Some share tips and tricks, some post lots of pretty pictures, and some just talk about what’s new with them that day; some are hilarious, and others are just really honest. All tell stories about their lives in some form or another. To give you ideas, here is a random sampling from my Google Reader:
- SlowMama
- Barefoot and Pregnant
- Look. Snap. Love.
- Fountains of Home
- Sarah Sitting Down
- Kelle Hampton
- Mama Needs Coffee
- My Shtub
So, based on that, what else should I be reading? Recommend away! Please include a brief description of the blog, since clicking through and figuring out what a blog is about on my own is waaaaay out of my league right now. (And shameless self promotion of your own blog is welcome!)
Now I’m all exhausted from writing this post, so back to resting. Thanks in advance.
For your convenience, you can have each Conversion Diary post delivered free by email or on a feed reader.

Jen ~ You are welcome to peruse my humble – but stridently sincere – family blog. It features my sagacious insights, family photos with mildly humorous commentary and political worldview rants. I certainly have enjoyed your roar-out-loud, poignant posts, so hop by mine, if you’d like.

I’ve got over 1,000 blog posts on my primary blog alone, “Blog of the Courtier”, and if you’re thinking about ever visiting Barcelona I have another blog-project called “Catholic Barcelona” with histories of all the interesting churches, basilicas, monasteries there, in English, with photos.
I’m one of the regulars on SQPN’s “Catholic Weekend” podcast and this past Saturday we did ask our listeners to pray for you. I hope you will continue to be on the mend and God bless.

Well, I’m writing again in a very different way–and glad to hear that you are on the mend! I learned about your health issues from Melanie on Facebook. What I’m writing would be–let’s say a “change of pace,” and not exactly on same lines as your usual reads. My “Booknotes from Literacy-chic” is what I’m calling a “notable moments” blog, which means that I blog mini-scene-analyses while I read whatever it is that I’m reading. Right now, I’m working through the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, which is kind of historical fiction with a fantasy element and romance leanings. So yeah. But Melanie’s interested, so I thought I’d mention it in case you get really bored!
Hi Jen! We’ve been following your status and praying for you. You can check out hawthornediaries.com and be sure to read what my little Peter decided to ingest recently! Wishing you guys the best!

Well, I guess I can offer a shameless plug for my blog. It is about how I learned that less (stuff, spending, baggage, etc) makes room for a richer life after our family of 7 had to walk away from our home and belongings because of a toxic mold infestation. I also have a bunch of good blogs in my sidebar on various topics, but with the unifying theme of simplicity. Having a large family I find simplicity is essential, in crisis times more than ever!
Praying for your recovery and your sweet bbe!

I have a website, Franciscan Quote of the Day, (http://www.franciscanqotd.com/), where I share writings that resonate with my ongoing formation as a Secular (also known as Third Order) Franciscan. The quotes aren’t all from strictly Franciscan sources but they all have, I hope, a Franciscan flavor.

Well, of course there is Catholic Sistas: http://www.catholicsistas.com which I have a feeling you’re well acquainted with. I also love Sarah Reinhard’s blog, Snoring Scholar and I believe you know Sarah so that one might already be in your reader as well. Another of my favorites is The Breadbox Letters: http://thebreadboxletters.blogspot.com/. All her posts feature a beautiful art work and a quote of some sort from a saint or pope or poet or something that is interesting, intelligent, thought-provoking, etc. They are short and pretty regular (daily or almost daily). She has some other blogs too, but I currently only follow this one. She does occasionally have slightly longer posts in which she offers a reflection on something.
I also enjoy following Pat Gohn’s blog: http://www.patgohn.net/blog/. Fun posts, reflective/spiritual posts, and links to her weekly podcast.
There are probably a bunch of others too, but that’s just a few of my favorites. I’ll also humbly promote my own little blog: http://journalofnobody.blogspot.com. I am the pastor of St. Andrew Catholic Church in the small town of Milord, Ohio, 30 minutes by car east of downtown Cincinnati. A unique focus and emphasis of my blog is that it speaks of the life and the struggles of the Christians in the Holy Land, particularly the Christian Palestinians. I have a very special place in my heart for the Catholic Church in Beit Jala in the Bethlehem-area. People say that I have a Palestinian soul. That pleases me.
In accord with the special role our patron Andrew had among the apostles as the Great Introducer, it is the particular character and charge of St. Andrew parish to welcome and engage all who come to us, as “our doors open wide at the very thought of your coming,” hoping to introduce them to others and to Christ.

I would shameless promote my own blog, but locally here we’ve been addressing the issue of homelessness. And the “Merrimack Valley Regional Network to End Homelessness Blog” here in Lowell MA is something I would rather shamelessly promote so others can do in their own communities.
“Yesterday (photo above), Centralville resident, Paul Belley invited myself, along with Kim Scott, Tom Michaels, Roland Cartier and Tori Germann to make the trek down to the camp at Beaver Brook. There we were greeted by 9 men and women who call that area their home for lack of housing.
A young woman who has bone cancer. Most mornings she has a great deal of difficulty getting out of her tent due to the illness that is slowly – painfully taking her life. This illness currently goes untreated as she has lost her insurance due to lack of an address, lack of connection with homeless service providers, a healthcare provider and the wherewithall to have the insurance reinstated. In addition, she reported that she had been wearing the same pants for the past several days because they stuck to her leg after sustaining a burn, which goes untreated. By virtue of her disease, she has severe mobility issues. Ultimately, if she is not re-housed in short order, she will die much sooner and her last breath – taken in a cold, snowy tent along the banks of the Merrimack River.
No need to remind you, dear reader, that we experienced significant snowfall last evening and heading into a cold weather stretch. Admittedly, this is a photo of the wooded area in the back of my home this morning. The terrain along the banks of the Merrimack is rather treacherous for the average person, never mind someone with such significant medical and mobility issues.”
Small things make a big impact…
“While $5 may not seem like a lot, here are some gift card ideas that have a terrific impact:
CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens for prescription co-pays/OTC medicine – chronic illness & mental issues are often intertwined within our homeless population. The ability to secure the appropriately prescribed medication to treat an illness is a great prevention tool for our homeless men and women. Once again, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.
Bus Passes – will allow homeless men and women to access services that they require, find employment or get to work so they can earn money to become housed once again.
Pre-Paid Phone Cards – allows a homeless individual to facilitate communication with family, employment and service access.
Haircut – gift certificate to a local barber or hairdresser.”
A good read…

Late to the party, but my blog is about having a child with Down syndrome. She’s our fifth. There is also one of a dear friend about her daughter’s Trisomy 18 diagnosis. It began as a journey about choosing life for her baby, and now continues about the daily miracle her child’s life continues to be. Ms. Nora is 8.5 months old and doing great!

Well, I guess you already ready Simcha Fischer and Hallie… I just spent 45 minutes going through Simcha’s NCR blog roll. Hil-arious.
I just yesterday stumbled on http://www.revolutionoflove.com/blog/. I’ve only read a few posts, but Bobbi has some amazing insights embedded in casual reflections about living her life as a mom of four. One of my favorite points was something about how Bobbi was at one point discerning a call to the religious life. She went on a summer-long retreat where they
There’s also one that barefootandpregnant recommended recently, but I cannot for the life of me remember the name of it… or find it.
http://ironicalcoincidings.wordpress.com/ is fantastic and pretty different. It’s not a “slice of life” blog. It’s the reflections of PhD student at UChicago. He writes excellent movie reviews and has interesting posts on technology, art, the origin of words… it’s written by a friend of mine who is one of the most intelligible intelligent people know.
You are so welcome to read mine but 1: it’s just starting out and 2: I recently posted requestions prayers for your “pulmonary embrosis.” Which is so not a thing.
It’s rachelandreesa.wordpress.com.
Both Rachel and I (Reesa) went to UD (of Calah Alexander fame). I posted recently but usually stick to “quick takes.” Rachel posts reflections on being a first year teacher and aspiring opera singer– also some pretty epic movie reviews. There’s one on Les Mis up now. My family and I are praying for you and your family, and thank you for asking for blog recs!

Check out http://crappypictures.com/ It is a hilarious blog about daily life of parenting small children. I cried laughing.
Thanks for sharing this. I can’t breathe through the laughing. Jen…maybe wait on this one??
Praying for your healing!!
My blog only has about 28 posts in it, but it basically just my thoughts and feelings along with some good ole’ slice of life stuff! It’s a pretty humble, small blog, but you are welcome to peruse it.

Prayers for your full recovery!

I think innermosthouse.blogspot.com would interest you.
It is a journal of philosophical musings by a woman who, along with her husband, lived in a secluded, tiny house without electricity for seven years. The discussion in the comment section is very good, too.
Here is a link to a short video about this couple and their little house in the woods: http://tinyhouseblog.com/tiny-house-video/kirstens-innermost-house-video/#comments
I would like to recommend Keep on Spinning, http://keeponspinning.wordpress.com/ which is the blog of a Catholic woman doctor who has suffered from breast cancer for a few years. She has an amazing family with two special needs children. Her story is incredible. Her hobby is spinning wool and knitting and she makes the most amazing things. If you can start at the beginning and work your way forward that would be really cool. This is I think her first post in 2008 http://keeponspinning.wordpress.com/2008/11/04/day-6-174-to-go/ Her blog will keep you riveted. And the small doses you can read now would be excellent. She does not post that often.
I also like Abigail, a 3rd order Carmelite mom, and her struggles in the faith raising a family. http://abigails-alcove.blogspot.com/
Feel better soon!
I read many blogs that are probably already on your radar, like The Wine Dark Sea, Scrutinies, Karen Edmisten, Charlotte was Both, Testosterhome, Conversion Diary (:-D). There are a few that aren’t in the normal Catholic blog categories, like Email from the Embassy. It is written by Donna, a foreign service spouse who currently lives in Amman. She has four kids and works at the Embassy there, too. Before Amman they were in Beijing, and several other places before that.
Like Jen, I was thinking…we already read a lot of the same blogs! You’re always welcome to come over to St Monica’s Bridge (stmonicasbridge.wordpress.com) and see me there or on my autism blog (smilingautismmama.wordpress.com) but I’m enjoying this list as it’s giving me some great new blogs to check out!

Praying for you and yours.
My blog, http://yardsaleofthemind.wordpress.com/ is weird – I’m an older married guy with kids and obsessions with bad Science!, Carl Sagan’s insanely inflated reputation, philosophy and bad church music. I try to include amusing pictures with witty hover-over texts. The ‘Gol durn kids! Get offa my lawn!’ category does include pictures of sundry parts of my children, out of a no doubt misguided respect for their privacy. One could easily conclude from the pics that they shamble about decapitated. If *I* were sick in bed, I would avoid it like the plague.
We have 2 slight connections: we almost met up at the West Coast Walk for Life a couple years ago, but you didn’t get my email in time; and you have been to my blog at least once already, because you linked to an essay about my sister, the Sisters of Mercy and the LCWR.
Anyway, if you’re *really* desperate, give it a click.
