7 Quick Takes about the big day, a trailer for a trailer, and a dare to come up with a better prize than a Segway vacuum
I’ve been racking my brain for what we can all do to celebrate. After briefly fantasizing about a 15-city tour that takes place in the span of 48 hours so that we can all get together for in person, I thought it might be easier for all involved if we find ways to party that involve sitting in front of our computers (this is what happens when brains in jars have books released).
So here’s the deal:
I’ll be giving away a bunch of fabulous prizes for people who celebrate the book’s release with me in the first week or two after it’s out.
There will be random giveaways for blog posts and social media mentions, as well as contests that will require you to bring your A-game. Obviously, we have to give awards for Most Epic Selfie Holding the Book, and Picture of the Book in the Weirdest Place. But I need some suggestions from you to get this finalized:
- What other categories do we need? I was thinking of adding Picture of Almost Getting Arrested for Disruptive Behavior in Bookstore While Holding Copy of Book, but I decided against it because I’m not positive that the book will have nationwide bookstore distribution.
- I also need prize ideas. There are going to be big prizes that are guaranteed to please (cough-cough-iPadMini), but I also need ideas for awards that are fabulous in a different way.
I raided my Pinterest boards to come up with my dream list of giveaway prizes, and here are a few gems to act as thought-starters for you:
A professional graphic artist Photoshops the winner into the picture above.
The winner has a Segway-vacuum unit built for him or her.
The winner receives a gift perfect for the person who’s too tired to care about fashion anymore.
Alas, I don’t have enough time to arrange to give away these exact items (except for maybe the first one — artist volunteers, email me!) So now I need suggestions of real items that I could actually give away that are equal in amazingness to these. It’s a daunting task, but I know you’re up to this challenge.
What I am most excited about with this book’s release is being able to talk about the themes of the book with you! A few friends who received early copies texted me their thoughts as they read, and it was fascinating to hear their perspectives and their stories of similar moments in their own lives.
I’ve been trying to think of a way to replicate that experience on a bigger scale, and I think that the best way to do it is through social media and a hashtag. If you’d like to share thoughts while reading the book, use the hashtag #SOTG. I’ll follow it on Instagram and Twitter — maybe I’ll even get crazy and figure out how to use Facebook!
I’m determined for #SOTG to be the official hashtag, since #SomethingOtherThanGod takes up a lot of space, so it was with great trepidation that I looked to see if #SOTG is already in use.
It turns out that it is currently being used to refer to Sweethearts of the Galaxy. I have no idea what this is. But I don’t dare research any further, since I need to believe that this is a lovely thing that would not be weird at all to get mixed in with updates about my book.
Maybe Sweethearts of the Galaxy is a G-rated movie about time-traveling Valentine’s Day candy! Or a sci-fi musical about wholesome supermodel space explorers!
Until I hear otherwise*, I’m going to assume it’s fine.
* Don’t tell me otherwise.
I have spent most of my time this week working on a video for the book that involves some writer friends who have helped me along the way. It is turning out so well, and involves such a fabulous group of people, that I have decided that it will be the best thing that has ever happened to the internet.
I am actually so excited about it that I had to create a preview for you to see now, even though I’m not even done with the recordings. It is in take #7 below.
And yes, only I would create a trailer for my book trailer.
Here is a teaser for the wondrous video I’m working on.
Oh, and THANK YOU. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for your generosity and support!
