The books are finally starting to arrive! I’m extending the giveaway deadline!

sotg pics The books are finally starting to arrive! Im extending the giveaway deadline!

Since a few folks are still waiting for their copies to come in, I’m extending the deadline for the giveaway. All contests will now end at 11:59 PM CDT on Friday, May 16. The list of contests with updated dates is below.

Meanwhile, we’re starting to hear feedback that Something Other than God is reaching folks who might not normally read books like this. People from all walks of life are writing in to say that they checked it out because they saw it on Amazon’s Top Memoirs section or on a display at their bookstore — and this is entirely thanks to your support. From the bottom of my heart…THANK YOU.

Something Other than God giveaways — with updated dates!

Important Legal Disclaimer: I cannot be held responsible for any selfie-related injuries incurred while entering this contest…I merely note that a picture of you holding the book while standing on an alligator’s head would definitely win.

3. WRITE A REVIEW OF THE BOOK ON A RETAILER SITE

PRIZE: $100 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+review@gmail.com with a link to your review.

RULES:

  • Reviews at Amazon are preferable, but reviews at any online outlet that sells the book are great too. (Amazon will begin allowing reviews on 4/29.)

  • The date of the review must be before May 17.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

4. WRITE ABOUT THE BOOK ON YOUR BLOG

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
a post here at my site introducing your blog to my readers

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+blogreview@gmail.com with a link to your review.

RULES:

  • Something Other than God has to be a central part of the post (e.g. it can’t only be one of your items in 7 Quick Takes, or mentioned in passing in one place).
  • The post does not have to be a standard review (e.g. If the book inspires a reflection on a certain subject or a story you’d like to tell from your own life, that’s great!)
  • The post must contain a link to somewhere where you can buy the book (this is a good chance to use your Amazon affiliate code!)
  • The post must be published before May 17.
  • In order to qualify for the introduction to my readers, your blog can’t be total craziness. I’m not going to be strict about this — at all — but, ya know, if you have a site called IDespiseCatholicsandPeopleWhoseNamesStartWiththeLetterJ.net, that’s not going to work.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

5. RECOMMEND THE BOOK TO THREE OR MORE PEOPLE WHO DON’T READ MY BLOG

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+tellfriend@gmail.com with the first names and last initials of whom you told (for example: “I recommended Something Other than God to Karen P., Mark S., and Thomas K.”)

RULES:

  • It’s fine to take your best guess about who doesn’t currently follow my blog — you don’t need to start an inquisition to smoke out closet readers before you begin your recommendations.
  • Imaginary friends don’t count.
  • This is on the honor system! If you say you told three people, I believe you.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.

6. GATHER A BOOK CLUB OF FOUR OR MORE PEOPLE TO READ THE BOOK

PRIZE: $75 gift card to a restaurant of your choice to get food for your gathering +
a 15 minute live Skype chat with me

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+bookclub@gmail.com with a link to an Evite or other online invitation showing four or more attendees.

RULES:

  • The primary purpose of the meeting should be discussion of Something Other than God.
  • It would be great if all attendees wanted to buy the book, but it’s not a requirement (library copies okay).
  • You need to create the invite and enter by May 16, but the meeting itself can occur any time before June 30.
  • One entry per group.
  • You can choose the restaurant, but it needs to offer gift cards for sale online.
  • Winner will be drawn at random.
  • I will arrange my schedule around the winner’s book club meeting to do the Skype interview. However, if the meeting happens to occur in one of the rare blocks of time I absolutely couldn’t do it, we can make special arrangements for the video call.

7. TAKE THE MOST EPIC SELFIE WITH THE BOOK

PRIZE: $50 Amazon gift card +
your selfie MADE INTO A T-SHIRT that

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Selfies with any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • You should know that my entire life is about to revolve around looking at these entries.

your photo turned into magnets: one for your fridge, one for mine

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+weirdplace@gmail.com with a link to your picture (if you posted it on a private account you can attach the picture to the email, but links are preferable).

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest that will be evaluated by an esteemed group of judges, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • Pictures of any version of the book count (hardcover, ebook, or audiobook).
  • I don’t know if I will ever sleep again once these entries start coming in.

9. CREATE A NEW DRINK CALLED THE SOTG

PRIZE: $25 gift card to Williams-Sonoma +
the recipe posted on my blog with credit to you

HOW TO ENTER: Send an email to conversiondiary+drink@gmail.com with the recipe and a brief description of the drink.

RULES:

  • This is not a random drawing. This is a performance-based contest, so you’ll need to bring your A-game.
  • I will have a team of intrepid taste testers throughout the country trying these out, so let’s avoid exotic ingredients. (And I note that while fried scorpion garnish might not be exotic for me, it would be for other people, so it’s out. Sorry.)
  • It does not have to be an alcoholic drink. (A piece of Joe will die every time he sees a non-alcoholic recipe, but we’ll just exempt him from judging those.)

Thank you for extending the deadline! I was beginning to think everyone but me had the book and it was tormenting me! I still don’t have it and I preordered LONG ago. Maybe I should just go buy copies and enter contest number 2…..

  3. I am really looking forward to your book.
    I just got it today!

  4. Catholic Bibliophagist says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s been having trouble getting your new book.

I ordered mine months ago, and Amazon promised a delivery date of May 1st.

Then came the email warning me that there would be an unspecified delay. (Spirits droop.)

It was followed by an email promising delivery on May 2nd. (Spirits soar.)

May 2nd: The book does not arrive. Amazon’s “Track Your Order” page first says it’s in transit, and then admits that delivery was attempted earlier in the day and that the package has been returned to the “carrier facility.” (In this case, FedEx.)

    The week-end intervenes.

May 5th: The same scenario is played out as on May 2nd. I finally manage to contact FedEx and am told that the driver did not deliver the package because we have a gated community. Despite the fact that he could have rung me on the intercom at the gate so that I could open the gate for him. Despite the fact that FedEx is always delivering packages in our complex without any gate problem at all.

They offer to hold the package for 5 days at a distant facility I can’t drive to.

They offer to send the package out for delivery again so that the driver can once again be stymied by the gate. (Because I’m not going to be home all day tomorrow to answer the intercom.)

I tell them that I guess they’ll have to send the package back to Amazon, and then they finally offer to deliver the package to a Fedex unit near my house where I’ll be able to pick it up myself. After 24 hours. But call first to make sure it’s actually there.

One of these days, Jennifer, I’ll finally get to read your book.

    Jen,

I HAVE to go to bed because my eyes are hurting and I’m about two and a half hours later than usual. But man, your book is good! Thanks Jen, it really is a good read!

  6. Received it yesterday (what up, Sunday Amazon delivery?) and finished it tonight. Loved it, Jen. Absolutely. I told some friends today that reading conversion stories is like vitamins for my faith. I am a cradle Catholic and at one point in my young life I distinctly remember thinking that “only an insane person would convert to Catholicism. You have to be born into this kind of crazy to stick with it.” So it is very heartening to read stories like yours. Will write a longer review for Amazon later, but thought I should let you know before I head off to bed.

  7. the other Becky says:

My two copies finally arrived while I was out of town over the weekend, so I was able to start reading when I got back Sunday night. I kept reading last night much later than I meant to- I felt as if I had to keep reading to find out what happened next, even though I kept saying to myself “I know how this ends!”. Good book!

I have been a Catholic for nearly 40 years now, and there were several points in your book which you explained in a clearer way that I have ever heard before, so in addition to adding to the sense of excitement of our faith, you are also adding to the catechesis.

BTW did you ever find out who Steve G. is IRL?

  8. Kris says:

What if we pre-ordered the book from Amazon? Would that count for the purchase contest? My receipt from Amazon says delivery was between the April 29th and May 15th, but the order date was back in February.

  9. drustee says:

Jennifer Fulwiler, that was a good read.

Having followed your blog since 2007, and read all the posts from your Reluctant Atheist blog, I had wondered if you’d be able to present the story in a fresh way. Well. Hats off to you. Really.

All the hard work, and the re writes show. The story is well pruned. The content is very engaging. I did laugh, I did cry. I can only imagine all that you cut out of the final draft. Prehaps you’ll give us a few glimpses here sometime.

Well done Jen. Will definitely be recommending the book, and getting more copies.

  10. Agnes says:

I’m so glad you extended the deadline. I just got my copy on Saturday from Amazon so I’m still walking around and taking epic selfies with it. Oh, and I ordered another copy to enter contest 2 also….I just don’t know who to give this copy to..I’m sure I’ll find someone ;-)

P.S. I heard your interview on Relevant Radio yesterday and it was so great!!! I couldn’t stop listening to your story and your insights Jen! Especially since I haven’t read SOTG yet…so the interview gave me a sort of an intro to what the book will be. I’m trying to get through my pharmacy school projects and final exams so I can jump into the book! So far…all I have been doing is carrying it around everywhere taking pictures of it, haha.

Thankyou for this book. I am a cradle Catholic who loves our faith. I heard your story on one of the Lighthouse Catholic Media cd’s and loved it. I recommendedit to all my facebook friends and then asked my husband to get me the book for mother’s day. I am about halfway through it and can’t put it down. I teach in the RCIA program at our local parish and havehad an interest in learning how to speak to atheists on the level where they are at. I appreciate your honesty and willingness to put your personal experiences in writing. I hope God will use your work for many convetsions! God bless you. Ifeel like I’ve made a new friend!
